AgentOven vs LangSmith
LangSmith is LangChain's platform for tracing, evaluating and deploying LLM applications. AgentOven overlaps on tracing, and adds a governance control plane, open protocols (A2A and MCP) and simulated-world testing for agents from any framework.
Choose LangSmith when
- Your stack is mostly LangChain and LangGraph
- Your main need is tracing, datasets and evaluations
- You prefer a hosted developer tool
Choose AgentOven when
- You need RBAC, approvals, cost tracking and an audit trail on agent actions
- Agents come from several frameworks, not only LangChain
- You want grading on world state rather than on a judge model
- You want an Apache 2.0 core you can self-host
Using both together
AgentOven exports traces over OpenTelemetry, so teams can keep LangSmith for developer debugging while AgentOven governs, routes and gates the same agents in production.
How AgentOven works
- Govern: RBAC and SSO, scoped keys, guardrails including PII detection, cost tracking per agent, approval gates and an immutable audit trail.
- Connect: A2A between agents, MCP to tools, and a model router with fallback across providers.
- Prove: test suites, plus scenarios in a typed, simulated world graded on the state the agent changed (early access).
